WAM signs MoUs on exchanging media content with news agencies of India, Portugal

By Hatem Hussein DUBAI, February 12th, (WAM) — The Emirates News Agency, WAM, has signed three Memoranda of Understanding with the Press Trust of India, PTI, Indo-Asian News Service, IANS, and Portugal ‘s News Agency, LUSA, to enhance cooperation and news exchange.

The MoUs were signed by Mohamed Jalal Al Rayessi, Executive Director of WAM, V.S. Chandrasekar, Executive Editor of IANS, Sudhakar Nair, Executive Editor of PTI-India, and Monica Garcia, Sales, Marketing and International Relations Director for LUSA, on the sidelines of the now-running World Government Summit in Dubai.

The agreements translate the desire of WAM to strengthen professional cooperation ties with renowned news agencies around the world in areas of news exchange to ensure a wider reach for the agency’s news coverage and ultimately present the country’s achievements to the largest possible number of world peoples.


The memoranda envisage media collaboration between WAM and the three agencies as per the applied legislation in effect in the four countries with regards to the daily and free exchange of news content in English, and in other languages that shall be agreed upon by the signatories, as well as the exchange of images and video footages.

Commenting on the agreements, Al-Rayessi affirmed the importance of the newly formed partnerships with the three agencies, commending the prestigious positioning held by IANS, LUSA and PTI regionally and internationally, which, he said, will reflect positively on the reach of WAM coverage services.

“It is a win-win partnership, as WAM will benefit from the three agencies in ensuring wider reach for our coverage, and in the same time they will be able to transmit their news via our wires. In addition, the signings reflect the importance of the World Government Summit which has proved over the past years to be an ideal platform that brings different world cultures together under one umbrella that corroborates the UAE stature as an eminent convener of global leaders, strategists, tacticians and media professionals “

He added that the MoUs will help boost awareness of the achievements of the UAE on a wider regional and global scale. “It is a further step on the path toward ensuring a wider reach of our services after we have recently launched our news content in six languages in addition to Arabic and English to address peoples of more than 100 world countries. These languages are French, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and Urdu,” added Al Rayessi.

For his part, the executive editor of PTI commended the current transformational change WAM is going through to keep pace with the rapid and multi-faceted developments in the modern media industry.

“Press Trust of India is interested in the services provided by the Emirates News Agency and we are determined to strengthen our bilateral relationship and ensure the efficient exchange of news, images and videos,” he said.

Speaking to Emirates News Agency, Monica Garcia of LUCA commended the impressive changes introduced by WAM over the past period and affirmed her agency’s readiness to bolster bilateral relations to the common good of both nations.

For his part, V.S. Chandrasekar, Executive Editor of IANS, said the MoU reflects the desire of both sides to accelerate cooperation in the way that will reflect positively on the wider strategic relations between the UAE and India.
