WAM participates in conference on access for women journalists to decision-making positions in Arab news agencies

TUNIS, 25th April, 2018 (WAM) — Participants at a conference of Arab news agencies in Tunisia were given insights into the latest media and digital platforms used the Emirates News Agency, WAM, to reach out to the world through eight languages via social media.

WAM officials spoke at the conference held under the theme: “Access of women journalists to decision-making positions in Arab news agencies,” in the presence of Arab news agencies representative about WAM’s mandate and mission as the most reliable source of information and news about the UAE.

The two-day conference was organised at the initiative of Tunis Afrique Press (TAP) news agency in collaboration with Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), aimed to highlight the status of women journalists, notably those working in news agencies and the steps made to consolidate their position in decision-making posts.

Discussions over the two days focussed on the current status of women journalists in the Arab world; Arab female news agency journalists: barriers to leadership; state of gender and equality in Arab news agencies and proposals to promote the status of female journalists in news agencies.

At the conclusion of the conference, which was attended by Minister of Women, Family and Children Neziha Labidi, participants highlighted the importance of access of women journalists to decision making posts according to criteria of competence and called for developing bespoke training programmes for women journalists at the FANA’s training centre in Jordan so as to gain skills and knowledge required to take up leadership role.

The participants also recognised the importance of organising regular training programmes, participation ion international conference and exchange of visits between Arab and foreign agencies to learn about best practices including latest media trends and technology.

FANA Secretary-General Ferid Ayar,TAP Chief Executive Officer Lotfi Arfaoui and KAS Resident Representative Holger Dix attended the event.
