Video: BJP leader offers to abduct girls who reject marriage proposal

Dubai: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in India has offered a solution for young men if their marriage proposal gets rejected by girls. Indian social media users are furious at the politician’s solution. He has offered to abduct the girls.

In a video that was widely shared on Twitter, MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly), Ram Kadam from Ghatkopar, Mumbai, was heard making the outrageous remark while addressing a crowd that largely comprised of young men attending an Indian festival.

On Twitter, Indian journalist Dhaval Kulkarni shared the video that showed Kadam speaking in Marathi. The politician said: “[If you come to me saying] … ‘Sir, I proposed to a girl, she said no. Please help me.’ Then, 100 per cent, I will help. First, bring your mother and father to me. If they say ‘we like the girl’, what I will do? Should I get them married? I will abduct her and give her to you.”

Condemning the remark @dhavalkulkarni tweeted: “Ram Kadam #BJP MLA from Ghatkopar in Mumbai offers to abduct girls and marry them off to their jilted suitors. This, at a time when there are reports of girls committing suicide after being harassed by eve teasers. #RamKadam #shame”

Tweep @umeshw14 also posted: “BJP MLA from Ghatkopar, Mumbai, Ram Kadam is seen in a video where he says he can kidnap girls. He tells the boys in the audience that if a girl rejects their advances, but if their (the boy’s) parents agree with their choice, then he, MLA Ram Kadam, will abduct the girl for them, Shame!”

Commenting on the law and order situation in the country, some hoped that the MLA will face legal consequences for his statement.
@Anjali_menon21 tweeted: “Since people are casually being arrested without evidence, I wonder when the BJP MLA who threatened to abduct women will be arrested.”

Indian student activist and author Gurmehar Kaur (@mehartweets) also posted: “Since casually arresting people in the country has become a norm I’m waiting to see when they will arrest the BJP MLA threatening to kidnap women. I’m sure that threat makes the cut if shouting anti-government slogan makes the cut.” She was referring to student Lois Sophia’s arrest at an airport in India, on Monday, for shouting anti-BJP slogans on a flight.

Some felt Kadam deserved to be expelled from his political position, for his irresponsible and insensitive remark.

@Santos_Nalawade tagged prominent BJP leaders on his tweet: “BJP MLA @ramkadam on last Tuesday purportedly said he would help ‘abduct’ a girl for a boy who likes her, even if she refuses his advances. @raosahebdanve @Dev_Fadnavis request you to expel him from the party. @AmitShah @Ramlal”

Ironically, one of the Indian government’s personal campaigns is called Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save daughters, educate daughters). It was introduced by Narendra Modi’s party in 2015 with the aim to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls.

Tweep @KapilSibalteam posted: “We need to save our women from these perverts. #BetiBachao has finally changed into #BJPseBetiBachao (Save the girl child from BJP).”
