DUBAI, 14th May, 2018 (WAM) — Mariam Hareb Almheiri, Minister of State for Food Security, today presided over a meeting of the Working Group for the Development of National Food Security Strategy to discuss the project’s achievements, challenges and main initiatives.
The working group has been formed in line with the directives of country’s visionary leadership with regard to developing a comprehensive national strategy for future food security that includes different initiatives in the related sectors.
Almheiri said that the strategy will be in line with the UAE Centennial 2071 plan that aims at placing the UAE as one of the best countries worldwide. “The group, in association with the decision makers and experts, is working on developing a strategy that ensures every individual living in the UAE to get healthy, secure and nutritious food with affordable price in all circumstances, including crisis and disasters,” she observed.
She added, “We also work on developing an integrated system for food security built on scientific research, the most up-to-date technological innovations worldwide and acceleration of adoption of modern technologies for food production that suit our country.”
Attendees reviewed the objectives of the strategy that include bolstering the UAE position as an international player in food security, building national strategic food reserves, agri-business, diversification of food imports sources, building partnerships for food security, public nutrition and health, increasing the local food productivity and educating the public on sustainable food consumption.
The strategy is scheduled to be finalised by September 2018.
