GENEVA, 6th March, 2019 (WAM) — The UAE mission to the United Nations in Geneva yesterday organised an event on the sidelines of the 40th session of the Human Rights Council, to mark the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.
In his speech during the event, Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN and Other International Organisations in Geneva, said that over 7,000 athletes representing around 190 countries will travel to the Middle East to participate in the first event of its kind in the region, which will be held from 14th to 21st March 2019, to compete in 24 official Olympic sports.
He added that hosting the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi is an integral part of the local, national and regional efforts to empower people of determination (persons with disabilities), in line with the UAE’s vision to create a unified and integrated community.
Al Zaabi went on to say that the Special Olympics embodies the messages behind the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.
Maria Soledad, UN Special Envoy on Disability and Accessibility, sent a message of appreciation and love to the UAE for organising the event.
