Defendants kicked and robbed victim who was carrying Dh134,000 in salaries of his travel agency employees
Dubai: Three men have been jailed for three years each for beating a businessman and stealing his bag that contained Dh134,000 in salaries of his travel agency’s employees.
The South Korean businessman had asked his company’s driver to take him to the bank to transfer the employees’ salaries in May.
The businessman had just exchanged US dollars to dirhams and while he was walking to deposit Dh134,000 in the bank, three Pakistani men mugged him in a street at 10.30pm.
The Pakistani trio kicked and assaulted the businessman, snatched the bag containing money and absconded.
The businessman and his driver tried to locate the trio in the area and then called the police.
Preliminary police investigation revealed the involvement of a mechanic, a driver and a worker in the crime. They were apprehended shortly after the incident.
On Sunday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the trio of using physical force against the businessman and robbing him.
Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi said the defendants, who pleaded not guilty, will be deported after serving their jail terms.
The businessman said he was mugged shortly after he had walked out of the money exchange at Dubai International City.
“I had the employees’ salaries in the bag and the driver took me to the bank where I was supposed to deposit them in the account. The defendants kicked me and assaulted me. They took the bag and absconded. When my driver and I did not find the culprits, we called the police,” he said.
A police lieutenant testified that the trio admitted that they had mugged the businessman in the street.
“One of them said during questioning that the other two suspects gave him Dh15,000 and they kept the rest of the amount for themselves. The businessman recognised the suspects at the identity parade three times,” the police official said.
The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
