Sultan visits Calligraphy Biennial

Sultan tours biennial’s stands and briefed by calligraphers on artworks on display

Sharjah: His Highnesses Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Sunday visited the 8th edition of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, SCB. Themed “Jawaher”, the two — month event is organised by the Sharjah Department of Culture from April 2 to June 2. He toured the biennial’s various pavilions, which attract several renowned calligraphers and practitioners from across the world to showcase their artworks and art projects.


He also visited Dar Al Nadwa where he talked with the distinguished guests participating in the show, and discussed with them the future of Arabic calligraphy. He was also briefed on their experiences and productions. The participants praised Dr Shaikh Sultan’s relentless support for the art of calligraphy.

As part of his tour, Dr Shaikh Sultan visited the Emirates Society for Arabic Calligraphy and Islamic Ornamentation, where he was briefed on the artworks on display and their contents. He highlighted the need to encourage young Emiratis to study the art of Arabic calligraphy.

Trends

Dr Shaikh Sultan concluded his visit by touring the Sharjah Centre for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy and Ornamentation that hosts an exhibition featuring a number of creative artworks representing different trends of art produced by a number of prominent artists.

During the tour, a number of gifts were presented to the Ruler that included calligraphy works and some scientific books and academic studies on the art of calligraphy.

The event witnessed the participation of 227 artists and calligraphers displaying 500 artworks.

Dr Shaikh Sultan was accompanied by Shaikh Salem Bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Head of the Ruler’s Court; Abdullah Bin Mohammad Al Owais, Chairman of Sharjah Department of Culture, Dr Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, Mohammad Obaid Al Za’abi, Head of the Protocol and Hospitality Department, a number of guests, artists, officials and dignitaries.
