Qatar National Bank investigating alleged security breach

Qatar National Bank, the county’s biggest lender, is investigating an alleged security breach of customer data posted online this week.

The data includes account information for Al Jazeera journalists, members of the ruling Al Thani family and government officials, International Business Times reported. Some files had pictures of account holders from Facebook and LinkedIn, according to the report.

QNB said it would not comment on “social media” reports and that there is no financial impact on its clients or the bank and that it is further investigating the matter. A QNB spokesman declined to comment beyond the statement today.

Global losses from hacking and undesired spamming exceed US$100 billion a year, according to Kaspersky Lab. Hackers stole $101 million from Bangladesh’s central bank in February, and at least 40 million credit cards were compromised in a data breach at Target in 2013.
