The girl and her dad were knocked down by a truck when it overtook a bus and collided with their scooter coming in the opposite direction
Thiruvananthapuram: A teenaged girl lost her life when she and her father on a scooter ride were knocked down by a truck.
Megha Varghese, 14, a Grade 9 student, was pillion riding on a scooter with her father Vellanikkal Varghese Joseph in Kottayam town when the vehicle hit their two-wheeler. Both were thrown off the scooter and suffered head injuries.
While Joseph was admitted to a hospital in Kottayam, Megha succumbed to her injuries. According to reports, the accident occurred when the truck overtook a bus and collided with the scooter coming in the opposite direction.
The accident happened on Friday around noon when Joseph and Megha were returning after a visit to the Arthunkal church. Megha was a student of the St Philomina’s school at Arpookara on the outskirts of Kottayam. She is the eldest of three daughters of Joseph and his wife Jinsy.
Joseph suffered injuries to his head and lower jaw, lost several of his front teeth and the vision in one of his eyes has been affected. He is a worker at the local market in Kottayam.
Heart-rending scenes were played out in the hospital when Megha’s body was brought there for Joseph to have a final look at his daughter. He was not informed about his daughter’s death until Saturday.
When the body was brought to the side of his hospital cot, Joseph defied his head injuries to turn his head and look at his daughter a final time. Megha’s body was later taken to the St Philomina’s school for her schoolmates and teachers to pay their final respects.
