Dubai: General Dr Vijay Kumar Singh l, Minister of state for External Affairs, greeted the Indian diaspora on the eve of Independence Day at the Indian Consulate in Dubai, where he also commended the authorities for negotiating the release of Gajanand Sharma, an Indian national released after 36 years of captivity in a Pakistani prison.

Dr Singh is well known for his work extricating stranded Indians in Yemen and bringing back the bodies of Indians murdered in Iraq.
The government of Pakistan released Sharma as a goodwill gesture on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day, August 14.
Dr Singh said: “It is indeed a very important day for the Sharma family and I spoke to his wife today. We made considerable efforts to trace Mr Sharma whose whereabouts were not known for over three decades. Sharma has been reunited with his family.”
