Egypt voices ‘sorrow’ over US veto on Jerusalem

‘Very worrying that the Security Council is unable to approve a resolution’

Cairo: Egypt late on Monday voiced “sorrow” after the US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution pushing for withdrawal of President Donald Trump’s recognition of occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital that has outraged Arabs and Muslims.

The remaining 14 members of the Security Council voted in favour of the Egyptian-drafted resolution that called for invalidating unilateral moves, which change the status of occupied Jerusalem.

“Egypt expresses its sorrow for failure to approve this important resolution,” spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Ahmad Abu Zeid said.

“It is very worrying that the Security Council is unable to approve a resolution emphasising its previous resolutions on the legal status of Jerusalem as being an occupied city subjected to the final solution-negotiations over the Palestinian cause,” he added in a statement.
