Applications sought for 2nd edition of ‘Mohammed Bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Distinction

DUBAI, 12th May, 2018 (WAM) — The Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Scientists has announced that it will begin receiving applications for the Mohammed bin Rashid Medal for Scientific Distinction, the most prestigious national accolade honouring accomplished scientists and researchers, from 7th May to 10th August, 2018.

The initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, recognises scientists who have excelled and left their mark in their respective disciplines in the UAE and abroad. The submitted entries are set to be evaluated by a judging panel comprising leading international scientists and experts, who will interview candidates and reveal the winners in December 2018 at the annual meeting of the Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Scientists.

Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences, said, “This initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum embodies the UAE’s ambitions to transform into an international hub for sciences and inspire scientists and experts to excel in various scientific disciplines, to make unprecedented breakthroughs and support the objectives of the UAE Centennial 2071 Plan.


“Excelling in science is our strategy to achieve our leaders’ visions and aspirations for an advanced society that drives sustainable development forward, ensures a better future for coming generations. In its first round, the award sheds light on brilliant scientists whose contributions have had a significant impact on the wider sciences sector and its progress on a local and international scale. With this edition, we look forward to highlighting the role of science and research in sustainable development and in shaping the future of the UAE and the world.

“In any society, scientists are the engine of development, and implementing their findings is fundamental for the continuity of these societies and their ability to meet present and future challenges. Having a skilled scientific community is directly linked to a nation’s living standards; with that in mind, the UAE leadership has sought to highlight this sector’s achievements and honour scientist whose work has supported the progress and development of society.”

Dr. Ahmad bin Abdullah Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Higher Education and Advanced Skills and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, said, “The generous initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, will remain the main engine driving the development of the scientific ecosystem, and the catalyst for scientific excellence across all disciplines. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed’s directives serve as the foundations for building a robust scientific infrastructure, paving the way for more achievements that improve quality of life for people in the UAE and abroad, further establishing the Emirates as a foremost producer of knowledge, not simply a consumer of it.”

The applications will be evaluated by an international judging panel based on a wide set of criteria. Candidates can either submit their application to the committee personally or be nominated by someone else. Candidates need to have made an impact in their respective fields of specialisation, they must be an active member of the local scientific community and be committed to supporting young scientists and imparting knowledge. Furthermore, their research needs to be beneficial to and in line with the priorities and vision of the UAE.
