10 residents honoured for reducing utility consumption

Initiative is part of Dubai’s Demand Side Management Strategy cut utility demand by 30 per cent

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) on Monday honoured 10 of its customers who live in Mirdif for reducing their water and electricity consumption.

They were chosen from 600 customers in Mirdif who were able to translate their conservation efforts into lower utility bills.

This is part of the first phase of the pilot project to encourage homeowners and households across the emirate in implementation of the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce energy and water demand by 30 per cent by 2030.

The first phase was implemented by Dewa from March to June 2017.

Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, said through this leading project, Dewa is committed to transforming Dubai into a model for a smart sustainable city, in collaboration with our partners from the public and private sectors.

“This establishes a sustainable energy-saving model that supports economic growth without compromising the environment and its natural resources,” he said.

Al Tayer commended the home and building-owners’ positive feedback in the first phase of the project. He lauded the high level of environmental and community awareness demonstrated by the participants and their efforts to reduce energy and water consumption.

Al Tayer said Dewa will continue to launch initiatives and projects to consolidate the concept of conservation among all segments of society. Dewa will also work to achieve its strategic objectives by contributing to the sustainable development in all its social, environmental, and economic levels, in Dubai.

Waleed Salman, Executive Vice-President of Business Development and Excellence at Dewa, stressed that the comparisons provided by Dewa to the owners of similar and neighbouring houses constitute an effective warning tool in case their consumption level is higher than the expected rate.

In these cases, customers should understand the reasons for their high consumption levels, and verify the problems or leaks, according to the advice provided by Dewa for each case.
