Who is responsible for renewing a residency visa, the sponsor or the employer? I work in an international school where staff have been told that they must repay the school for their visa renewal fees. Is this right? FC, Abu Dhabi
No. It is the responsibility of the sponsor to pay for visa renewal costs. In most cases the sponsor will also be the employer, in which case the employer pays, or if someone is on a spouse’s visa the spouse is the sponsor and pays the relevant fees. The employer is also responsible for the labour card and is never permitted to pass on the cost of visas or any other costs incurred in taking on staff to the employee.
