Hyderabad: Despite the best efforts by the police, rumours of child lifters roaming around were playing havoc in Hyderabad city. In another incident Monday night, an angry mob tried to lynch a ragpicker and the police could save her with great difficulty.
The trouble broke out in Mangod Basti of Asignagar area when a group of people armed with sticks and sharp-edged weapons surrounded a woman near a shop suspecting her to be a kidnapper. What raised their suspicion was that the woman was in an inebriated condition and was buying chips from a shop and a minor girl was standing next to her.
Alleging that she was trying to kidnap the girl, they started beating her up. On being alerted, the police rushed to the scene and rescue the woman. As the agitated mob was trying to snatch away the woman, the police locked her up in a house and sought the help of the local elders to cool down the tempers. Later the woman was moved to the Habibnagar police station.
P Madhukar Swamy, inspector of police, said the woman, Nagamani, was a ragpicker and after consuming toddy at a nearby vend along with another person, she was moving around in the area when the incident occurred.
“There was no truth in the allegation that the woman was a child lifter and no kidnapping incident was reported from the area”, he said. As the woman was unable to reply to the questions of the people due to her inebriated condition, the people had become suspicious and angry, he added.
Following the incident, additional police force was deployed and patrolling was intensified in the area.
Hyderabad city police continues to be on alert after a series of incidents of mob attacking beggars, transgenders and other people after the fake videos and rumours over social media about the presence of interstate gang of kidnappers and robbers created panic in the city. Such mob attacks have claimed four lives and injured a dozen others at different places in Telangana, including Hyderabad, over the last couple of weeks.
